Tucker update - 1 year!

Well, it’s official: my baby is not a baby anymore.  Sometime around 10 ½ months, I looked over at Tucker in his highchair and watched him as he smashed cooked carrots with the bottom of his sippy cup – and I realized that he was becoming less of a baby and more of a toddler everyday.

It’s been a quick transformation.  Although he’s always been verbal (lots and lots of babbling), he’s been a little late in developing motor skills.  He didn’t sit up by himself until he was 8 months old, and he didn’t crawl well until he was over 10 months old.  But, once he started crawling, he also began pulling up and cruising immediately.  He got a new walk-behind toy for his birthday, and to our surprise, he could walk all over the house while pushing it along.  He’ll be walking (running!) by himself very soon.

Even though he still babbles a lot, he is now able to communicate with us more effectively.  He will point and squeal if he sees something he wants ( i.e., sippy cup or especially, goldfish crackers).  He surprised us one morning when Jason was leaving for work.  As he was walking out the door, Jason waved at Tucker and told him bye.  Out of nowhere, Tucker waved back and said “bye bye”.  It was so cute – I think Jason stood at the door for another 10 minutes waving and saying “bye bye” to get Tucker to do it again.  It has become one of his regular “tricks” now.

He’s hit these developmental milestones despite being sick several times in the last 3 months.  He ended up with the dreaded RSV back in January, which resulted in multiple doctor visits and breathing treatments at home every 4 hours (not easy to give a very squirmy baby!).  Thankfully, my parents were able to come over and stay with him during the day until he was well again.  Then, about a month ago, he had rotovirus (for the uninitiated, it’s a week of vomiting and non-stop diarrhea – not fun).  Like most viruses, there wasn’t really anything we could do except ride it out.  It must’ve been the longest week ever!!  And now recently, he’s been back to the doctor for wheezing and seasonal allergies.  He’ll be going to see an asthma/allergy specialist for this.  He finally had his one-year checkup yesterday (you have to actually be well to have a well-baby visit!).  He weighs 22 lbs. (45th percentile) and he’s 29 inches long (25th percentile).  His melon-head is 18 ¼ inches in diameter (75 th percentile – must be his big brain!).

He was feeling great for his first birthday blowout.  Here’s a link to some of the pictures from the party.

Hope y’all are doing well.  Keep us updated on you.
