Tucker update - 2 months

It has been an eventful month at the Luna house!  We’ve dealt with everything from sickness to a roadtrip to the first day of school.

Our little Tucker has been very fussy lately, especially after each feeding, so I suspected he was having some tummy troubles.  I could tell he was in pain.  After the first of several phone calls to the pediatrician’s office, one of the nurses told me to try feeding him less, and so against my better judgment, I gave it a try.  Needless to say, that did not go over very well.  When I called them back, they asked me to bring him in to see the doctor.  I was afraid he would get there and act like a little angel, as if he was having no problems at all, and the doctor would think I was some nut-job new mother that has no clue what she is doing (ok, there may be some truth to that!).  But…right before the doctor walked into the exam room, Tucker’s face turned bright red, he arched his back, then he let out the most high-pitch, ear-piercing shrieking noises I’ve ever heard.  I was actually relieved that he screamed and cried the whole time the doctor was in with us.  I didn’t really have to describe Tucker’s problem to the doctor, as he could see it for himself.  Tucker gave such a good, Oscar-worthy performance, and he even threw in some projectile spit up for good measure.

The doctor told us that Tucker probably has acid reflux and we were advised to try putting some rice cereal in his bottles in order to keep milk down in his stomach instead of rising up into his esophagus.  We tried that for about a week, until one day when he cried for the entire day, from 8:00am until 10:00pm that night.  I was at my wit’s end.  The poor little guy was miserable – and thus I was too – and so I called the pediatrician AGAIN.  This time, he gave us a prescription for Zantac.  He’s been on it for about a week now, and (knock on wood) he seems to be improving.  In the midst of all his tummy problems, I had a tummy problem of my own…in the form of food poisoning…which kept me out of commission for the better part of 3 days.  Luckily, we all seem to be getting back to normal.

Despite all these problems, we’ve had a good month.  First of all, I celebrated my first Mother’s Day.  My son gave me a beautiful heart-shaped locket with my initials engraved on it (I think his daddy helped him pick it out!).  Now, Tucker and I need to shop for Father’s Day.  We also attended an arts festival, went for a stroll several times in the park in downtown Chattanooga, we’ve made many trips to Target and we even made a daytrip down to Atlanta to see two of my college friends.  Our roadtrip went pretty well, except that I forgot to pack a couple of parts for his bottles, and so I had to make an emergency stop at a Walmart along the way.  I realized how difficult it is to travel with an infant.  No matter how much stuff you pack, you will probably forget something important.  Ha!

We took the boy for his 2 month check up yesterday, which included his first round of immunizations.  He did cry when getting the shots, but I now understand the true meaning of the old parental adage “this hurts me more than it hurts you.”  Everything else with his appointment went well, and he now weights 8 lbs 12 ozs and he’s 21 inches long.

Also this week, Tucker started going to daycare – or “school” as I prefer to call it – for a couple of hours a day.  We are beginning the transition of me going back to work.  I am scheduled to return on Monday, June 20 and I will work 2 days that week, then 4 days the following week, then I will be back fulltime.  I was nervous about leaving him on his first day.  I had a little ting of guilt (and a few tears) as I dropped him off and pulled out of the parking lot, but when I got there to pick him up, he flashed his cute, gummy grin at me and then I knew he was going to be just fine.  :-)

As usual, we’ve taken tons of pictures and added them to our website (www.thelunas.com).  I have also attached a recent picture from Memorial Day weekend.

Hope all is well with you!
Deanna
