Introducing Tucker Daniel Luna
Surprise! Our little Tucker pulled the ultimate April Fool’s joke by making his grand entrance 4 weeks early and catching his parents completely off guard. In my last baby update, I mentioned being a little grumpy from the usual third trimester discomforts like heartburn, swelling, etc. The day after I sent that email, my slightly puffy feet become so swollen that I was wearing flip-flops to work because none of my other shoes would fit. I also had very swollen legs and ankles. I even called my mother on Thursday just to complain about how awful I felt (because mothers will listen to that kind of thing when no one else will). I asked her if she had any swelling when she was pregnant with me, and she told me that she never really did because I was a month early anyway. She told me about how her co-workers had planned a baby shower for her, but she missed it because she had already gone into labor. We both kinda laughed about that since I had a baby shower with my co-workers planned for Saturday. I had no idea at the time that I wouldn’t make it to my shower either…
Because of my swelling, I was concerned about my blood pressure, so I also called a nurse friend of mine. She came over to our house that night with her blood pressure cuff, and sure enough, my BP was slightly elevated. She suggested that I call my OB in case he wanted to monitor it further. I hesitated to call, but Jason finally talked me into it. I talked to the on-call doc, and he advised me to go to the hospital for monitoring.
So, about 8:30 that night, off to the hospital we went – with no bags packed, of course. We went up to the labor & delivery ward, and the triage nurse hooked me up to a BP monitor and told me that they would check it every few minutes for at least an hour. I had been there about 15 minutes when all of a sudden, my water broke! I must’ve gone into shock because I started babbling incoherently about how I did not have a bag packed, how I had too much left to do at work, how much my house needed to be cleaned, etc, etc. My friend Patrice was gracious enough to come down to the hospital and sit with me while Jason went home to pack our things.
My labor progressed well through the night and I got my epidural about 8:00am Friday morning. Life was good after that. :-) Jason did a great job in the delivery room – he was not queasy or weirded-out by the whole thing. In fact, he actually put on scrubs and was able to “catch” Tucker as he was coming out. When I saw my son for the first time, I burst into tears. I just couldn’t believe he was the little person that had been kicking me in the ribs for so many weeks.
Here are his vital stats:
April 1, 2005
1:16pm
5 lbs 14 ozs19 inches long
He has sandy blonde hair and the cutest little button nose. It’s amazing how much he looks like his last ultrasound picture.
We came home from the hospital on Sunday afternoon, and so far, things have gone pretty well. He does have a little jaundice and so we taking him to have blood drawn every day until it is better. Apparently, it is a common problem for newborns. In fact, Jason and I keep running into the same couple at the hospital. They have a baby boy that is 2 days older than Tucker.
Lots of folks have asked about pictures, so…we are happy to show him off! A good friend of Jason’s has set up a website where we hope to post pictures regularly. Just go to www.thelunas.com. You will be asked to create an account to view pictures. You can do that by clicking on the link on the left side of the page. Once you do that, click on the “pictures” link, then “2005” photos, then click on the link for the month of April. We’re adding to the site constantly, so be sure to visit often! Thanks so much to everyone for all your thoughts and prayers!
Love to all,
